Legal Assistant
SUMMARY
The Legal Assistant will provide: (1) legal support to attorneys and paralegals; (2) Assist with a wide variety of tasks such as assembly of immigration submissions before courts and other government agencies; (3) data entry in case management database; (4) Organize and maintain client files in document management system. This is an in-person position based in Kent, WA.

REPORTS TO Supervising Attorney and Office Manager

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide legal support to attorneys and paralegals.
  • Perform administrative and clerical tasks. Specific duties will vary.
  • Prepare new client intake forms, input client information in the conflict check system, and maintain client file database.
  • Input case data into the case management system.
  • Organize and maintain case files in the document management system.
  • Maintain and coordinate calendars. Schedule and coordinate conference calls and meetings.
  • As needed, assist with preparing and filing Employment Authorization applications.
  • Prepare and file Change of Address forms before the immigration courts and USCIS.
  • Prepare Freedom of Information Act Requests for Attorney review before filing with immigration agencies.
  • Assist with preparing and filing criminal background checks and obtaining criminal records.
  • Prepare, organize, and assemble legal documents, supporting exhibits, and petition filings for submission with immigration courts and USCIS.
  • Review legal documents and exhibits to ensure they are in proper format and contain all necessary portions or related documents produced for opposing counsel and immigration agency filings.
  • Document filing status in the case management system.
  • Assist with client communication.
  • Assist with foreign document translations.
  • Provide supports and back up to Receptionist for answering phones, scheduling consults, taking payments, and processing incoming and outgoing mail.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Associate degree or equivalent required. Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years of legal support experience as a Legal Assistant required.
  • 1+ years of experience in immigration law office preferred.
  • Proficient computer skills, Windows, file and directory management, Microsoft Word, Outlook, Adobe, Excel, and case management systems, such as Clio and Docketwise, or similar.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment, multi-tasking and working with multiple team members and with multiple deadlines.
  • Strong attention to detail and keen attention to deadlines.
  • Able to handle confidential and sensitive materials with discretion.
  • Experience managing multiple calendars.
  • Fluency in another language required (speak, read, and write). Spanish Preferred.

Paralegal
SUMMARY

The Paralegal will assist attorneys through: (1) communicating with clients; (2) managing cases and client calendars; (3) preparing and filing immigration petitions and supporting documentation. Types of cases our firm handles (but not limited to): humanitarian relief (asylum, Convention Against Torture, VAWA, U Visas), removal defense, visas, family-based petitions, detention representation, DACA, bond representation, naturalization, appeals work. This position requires substantial direct client interaction and collaboration with colleagues. In addition, the paralegal will correspond with U.S. Government and various county and state agencies.

REPORTS TO Supervising Attorney & Senior Paralegal

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Meeting and assisting clients with preparation of forms and collection of supporting documents for final review by attorney.
  • Maintain regular correspondence with clients.
  • Maintain client files in electronic database and physical archive.
  • Act as liaison between clients, attorney, and various government agencies.
  • Submit records requests to various government agencies.
  • Track filings and deadlines.
  • Provide case status for client matters as requested by responsible attorney.
  • Provide support to Receptionist and Legal Assistant by answering phone and conducting intake screen interviews for new clients.
  • Ability and willingness to take on complex cases in new areas.
  • Provide legal support to attorneys and Senior paralegal.
  • Assisting attorneys with drafting declarations and the development of theories.
  • Conduct legal and factual research.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Bachelor’s Degree or Paralegal Certificate
  • Minimum 2 years of previous immigration paralegal experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and adhering to deadlines.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive materials with discretion.
  • Excellent professional communication skills.
  • Computer literacy: experienced with Microsoft Office, law research programs, databases, able to quickly learn new software.
  • Problem-solving, multi-tasking and time-management skills.
  • Works well under pressure, able to adapt in changing situations.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team in a fast-paced environment.
  • Fluency in another language required (speak, read, and write). Spanish Preferred

Receptionist
SUMMARY

The Receptionist is the main point of contact for our firm. The ideal candidate is: (1) friendly and outgoing; (2) organized and dependable; (3) able to communicate and work with clients of various backgrounds. This position requires substantial direct client interaction and collaboration with colleagues. Position is based in Kent, WA.

REPORTS TO Supervising Attorney and Office Manager.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Welcome clients and visitors upon arrival and give them any pertinent information or directions.
  • Answering incoming calls and handling or directing to appropriate staff.
  • Manage incoming and outgoing mail and handle deliveries according to office procedures.
  • Responsible for initial screening of phone calls and scheduling legal consultations with attorneys.
  • Check voicemail throughout the day.
  • Responsible for front desk duties, including customer service and client relations
  • Assist with client account payment collection procedures.
  • Maintain tracking and delivery confirmation reports.
  • Complete other administrative duties as needed such as data entry, paperwork, photocopying.
  • Keep the copy room, lobby and conference rooms clean and
  • Perform other administrative duties and provide support as needed in coordination with attorneys and staff.

QUALIFICATIONS/SKILLS REQUIRED

  • Minimum associate degree or at least 1-2 years of prior relevant experience.
  • Prior experience in immigration law preferred.
  • Comfortable with both legal work and performing administrative tasks.
  • Passion for advancing and protecting the rights of immigrants.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to prioritize and multi-task.
  • Commitment to adhere to strict professional codes of confidentiality.
  • Excellent communication skills, experience in reception a plus.
  • Proficiency in use of word processing and spreadsheets (and client management software preferred).
  • Ability to work independently and as a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to learn quickly.
